Considered to be a suburb of Pompeii, the ancient Oplontis was the ideal location for gorgeous roman villas built on a promontory by the sea.
Excavations of the area are still under progress and a few villas were recognized. Among those, the spectacular Poppea’s dwelling is the only one open to the public for visits.
Located in the centre of the modern town of Torre Annunziata, the archaeological site of Oplontis, an extraordinary example of vacation villa of the past, is close to the Circumvesuviana train station.
The sumptuous Poppea’s villa is one of the largest dwellings of the area and it is decorated with spectacular frescoes. This amazing house was surrounded by an enormous garden which has only been partially excavated and it has a thermal bath section and many beautiful rooms where frescoes are still well preserved. The villa also had a huge pool which has not been completely excavated yet.
